"Lederhosen are sexy" - Oktoberfest 2011
Thursday, September 29: Off to Munich with Cait to stay with my cousin Carola! But before our adventure could begin, alot of planning needed to take place. We packed very lightly for our weekend, but then also had to have our stuff packed for our UK adventures when we returned. 1 backpack - 8 days. That was rough. We brought all our stuff over to Momma Nel's room since she lives right next to the train station. Then we got our free Deutsche Railpasses valided, grabbed some food and headed to off to Munich.
Carola met us at the train station and we got our first look at Oktoberfest with all the drunks in Lederhosen at the train station. Pretty hilarious. We went back to her apartment where we met her boyfriend, Oli, as well as had a traditional German homecooked dinner. YUM! Wurst und Sauerkraut mit Brezeln und Senf! :) We stayed up watching soccer with Oli and then knocked out.
#32: The next morning we woke up, got ready and PUT OUR DIRNDELS ON! Ah, so much fun. They are like corsets, but they make you feel super cool and super German so we love them. Def worth all the money.
We then headed off to the city with the Ubahn. Beer in hand, dirndel on...we were ready to take over the world. First stop, the Olympic Stadium. This is one of my favorite parts of the city. We walked through all of the different arenas and finally made our way to the track. Ahh, so beautiful. Unlike the last time I was there, we had to pay to get in..and we couldn't even get on the track, but it was still worth the hike. It did kill my buzz for a second though cause I REALLY wanted to hurdle in a dirndel...it would have been epic. Oh, well. We were off to Marienplatz to meet up with our friends.
Becca and Anne Marie, along with some of their friends and Matt met us in Marienplatz so we could tour the city for a bit. It was nice to be back with Midwestern Folk :) We all felt super cool in our dirndels, but we were not alone. The whole city was dressed up! So much fun. #33: We climbed up to the top of St.Peters Church and got a great view of the city. Thankfully it was a beautiful day and we could see for miles.
We then decided it was time for some food! Although it is super touristy, we hit up the Hofbrauhaus. I mean, technically we are tourists, and all of the SLU kids def were, so we deemed it okay. ha, it was a great choice. We all got Brezeln (as if I have not had enough), Brats and steins of Beer. We also got to meet some attactive men...sadly, they were American. Boo. We wanted some Germans!

#34: After the Hofbrauhaus, Cait and I split from the pack and headed over to Oktoberfest. Since we were leaving midafternoon the next day, we really wanted to see what the atmosphere of Oktoberfest was at night. It was crazy! SO many people. We had to hold hands through the whole place so that we wouldn't lose each other. After an hour we decided to head home to get ready for our real day of celebrations the next day. We had Chili con Carne with Carola, Oli and Oli's little bro, and then hit the sack.
#35: 7:00am wake up call to head over to Oktoberfest. Normally tents open at 10, but the lines start forming around 8:30. Lucky for us, Carola had some connections so we got in at 8:30 through a back entrance and got seated right away. Each tent holds 6,000 to 10,000 people so getting a good seat is very important. #36: At 8:50 we had our first beer steins of the day! Gotta start early at Oktoberfest. We were on our second liter when the band started at 11. Once the music started, the party really hit full force. We were in the Armbrustschutzen tent, which is known as less of a tourist tent and more of a Bavarian tent...exactly what I wanted. We sat with Carola and got to meet all of her friends. REAL BAYERNS! :) Loved it. Thankfully Becca and then gang also came to our tent so we were able to sit with them for a little too. It was crazy! Life in the tent was exactly what I anticipated. Everyone was super friendly, and really nice. #37:We even got beer and the oktoberfest hearts bought for us :) We were very happy girls. We stayed in the tent and "prosted" and danced until around 1pm.
Cait was not feeling great, so we got some fresh air on the Wiesn (known as the drunk hill). Carola warned us about the Wiesn, but of course where did we end up? The Wiesn. After some water and nuts, Princess Cait was feeling a little better so we met up with Becca and headed to the trains. God, only knows how we made it there with all of our stuff..but we did.
We got home that night around 9, and got to hear all about Momma Nel's and Laurens Oktoberfest adventures (they went the day before) . We stayed over at Momma Nel's because come 5am we had to catch a bus from the trainstation to the airport! Off to Scotland! :)
